Top Chinese Anime

The Founder of Diabolism

A cultivation story with BL sub hints. Mo dao Zhu Shi was one of the first chinese series to receive a decent amount of attention in the west. This was because of its good animation but also the characters.

The story itself is built around the characters and thats why the characters for me have a greater appeal. A lot of the story is flashbacks to built specific relationships between characters as well as developed the history and motivations of each characters that we get to know first in the present.

This creates interesting characters and gives a back drop to relationships in the present between characters and it is exactly these relationships that are the focus of the series and where it excels at. Its a good show overall, no wonder it garnered attention in Japan with a dubbed version earlier this year.

Black and White Warriors

Here we have a battle shounen series with a chinese folklore setting. In itself it's not a standout series but it was one of the earlier chinese series to have great animation. It also gets even better in subsequent seasons, when the series starts expanding into grander fights and these fights are all good animated fights.

The chinese mythological setting is interesting because even if Japan shares a lot of  influences from China, we have not had many many battle shounen series with chinese mythological setting animated. I find this quite fresh in this regard and having two main characters is also something we dont see very often in these series. The relationship between Hei and Bai is quite interesting and they provide a lot of comic relief between the serious battle arcs. They also start off as children to begin with but they grow older and become stronger throughout the series, so there is a sense of progression in their characters which is satisfying to see.

 Mantou's Diary

A sad but cute work featuring a homeless child. Mantou lives at a nearby park in a house made of cardboard. This follows his daily life and how it slowly starts to change after his encounter with different things and people.

The story has a more cutesy art style which kind of softens the sadness of the story but it is still rather heart wrenching to see a child living alone on the streets looking enviously at other children. who have parents and people who care for them. So the first few episodes are rather sad, but things become a bit more positive but its still has many sad moments.

The narrator is Mantou in the future, so we are looking at his sad past. This is a great idea because we know he managed to grow and survive against all odds. Mantou is a rollercoaster of emotions. It can be sad but it can be happy and the narration and the music enhance these moments. Mantou Riji is one of the best donghua series and it manages to be something that I have not seen in Japanese anime before.

The King's Avatar

Another chinese series that really got the eyes of anime fans on chinese animation. It is also by studio C.MAY the guys behind Mo Dao Zhu Shi. In this story we follow a renowned e-sports player that is forced out of his team, so he takes up a job as a night manager in a lan cafe.

The main character is quiet but he still has the skills to be the best and he wants to form a competitive team from scratch again. Ye Qiu is an interesting main character because he is rather reserved and shows little emotion even at the start when faced with a large setback.

These setbacks are eventually overcome and Ye Qie starts to come back to the level of his previous team. There is a lot of face slapping comedic elements here and with the stellar animation its quite a good series.

Cooking with Valkyries

A short series with run time of only 5 minutes. It is however a rather interesting series focusing around cooking with the characters from the game Honkai Impact. The series is rather simple, there is no story per say but it develops a specific character in every episode that focuses on the characters as well as a particular dish. It is an incredibly healing series with very soothing low key music that masks so well with the series that it is hardly noticeable. In addition to that every dish 's recipe is detailed at the end of the episode, so it also has that educational aspect for anyone interested in recreating the dishes in the series.

It is an incredibly appealing series for even people that are not fans of Honkai Impact like I am. It does make you feel a bit clueless at the start because the series seems to take it for granted that you know the characters and that is probably its only issue. But you do grow to know the characters through the episodes themselves so it does not feel as worse as it could have been.

The animation for it is also rather well done, unlike the other series in this list it focuses more on characters so there is less scenery. As a result the world feels much smaller to a series even though it is supposedly much larger. Of course, this is a consequence of what the series is at the end of a series focused on a character not on the world.

The Legend of Luo Xiao Hei

Luo Xiao Hei just can not feature in a top series list of chinese series. The series has featured in my previous video on underrated series and you can check that out after this one. It is underrated more because it does seem not many people have found it because everyone that I know that has given it a goal has enjoyed it and for good reason. This series' simple style is quite refreshing to see but do not let that simple style trick you, after all this series has great animation with fast paced action scenes.

However, at its heart Luo Xiao Hei is a comedy healing series with some action here and there.  The series is  about Xiao Hei, a yaoguai and his interactions with humans and other creatures like him. Its comedy is very different from the type present in Japanese series which, alongside the soothing music and cute yet great art make this series really charming.

It is just really cute and fun to watch, its no wonder it found a lot of fans in Japan like Mo Dao Zhu Shi.

Summer is here and we have a load of new anime to watch, but no one's got time to watch everything. So we are here with a list of titles to watch but also to avoid, because no one wants to waste time watching a stinker series.
