The Series to Look Out for in this Winter Anime Season

Anime Dao's Top Winter Season Season List!

Rust Eater Bisco

A hit light novel that has been well regarded in light novel reading circles and for good reason, this series is quite action and packed and the main character, Bisco is a trope-y character but his design is cool and I find him rather likeable. The story is set in Japan which has been taken over by 'rust' a disease / plague and it suddenly changes everything in the world. The world is left in ruin and covered by deserts of Japan become dessert and in this post apocalyptic world Bisco meets Milo and both start to journey together as they share a common goal, both want to find a mushroom that is supposedly able to consume rust.

Their journey together takes them to many places and their search for the mushroom of course means they stumble into many troubles. These are overcome by Milo smartness alongside Bisco explosive fighting ability. They have an interesting dynamic even though I find Bisco has a bigger draw to him than Milo.

The setting and overall aesthetic of the light novel and manga are rather vivid and cool looking which kind of left me expecting a very cool looking anime with maybe Studio Trigger's style. So i am disappointed with the anime more common style. But forgetting that, the studio in charge is a new studio and its a first time director in charge of it as well, which is probably not optimal but some other staff like Murai Sadayuki are better but its overall not the best staff. I still think its likely going to be a good action adventure series with hopefully some good heavy music and action scenes.

Ryman's Club

Ryman's Club is an original sports series which do manage to make up a decent part of the genre original anime go for. In contrast to others sports series recently thought, Ryman is about badminton and it also is not set in a high school or other educational institution. In fact, the main characters are working people, salarymen for the most part. This means it mixes up a bit and allows it to differ itself from most sports series and that should allow the writers to explore a different side to sports if they wish to.

The story takes places in Ryman's Club that gives its name to the series, its a badminton club that the main characters gets involved with. The main character was a prodigy badminton player but was traumatised by a loss in a high school tournament in the past and he encounters a colleague from his work place at the badminton club. What we know of the story so far is that and its an original work there is not much else I can know about it but the sport badminton and the working age characters does make it standout from others sports series in the season.

Lidens films is the studio in charge of it and they not a studio known for quality animation and the staff does not look too great but at least the PV looks alright, so I am holding hope that this can turn out alright.

The Requiem of The Rose King

Shakespeare plays reign heavy in the mind of many people in the modern day especially people from the UK like me. However, it is not as common to see in manga, anime well at least not Richard the 3rd. So, in this story we follow Richard through that turbulent period that marked the conflict between the house of Lancaster and Yorkshire that resulted primarily as a disagreement in the succession to the throne of England at the time.

In this context, we follow the Richard of York, a rather interesting character historically and with in the Shakespeare works and this series I believe manages to draw out and make him a rather interesting main character. The plot follows not strictly put in general in the same way as the shakespearian novels of the war or roses but I think the top notch aspect of this series is how it manages to craft a rather interesting Richard, who begins as a withdrawn and mentally scarred child due to his physical disabilities alongside many other things but he gradually comes into his own and becomes the key piece that we know he was in the war of roses.

The animation will be handled by J.C Staff, an alright studio which has a mixed track record. The director is Kentarou Suzuki who is okay, at least its not his first time as director for a series. Handling series composition is Hiroki Uchida who is also just okay and thats mainly because he has experience in the role even thought nothing he worked in has been too notable. Overall, i feel like the PV looks good, so whilst I do not expect the animation to be anything out of this world, but if its alright and well put together then it should be a great watch.

In The Land of Leadale

The slice of life isekai of the season, its one of the early pioneers of the narou age and its plot device was used in series like Overlord and The New Gate, the latter has yet to receive an anime yet but it will. So, the main character is transported into the world of the game. Thats a bit too simple, so let me explain a bit more, the main character played and the big thing here is that she was heavily incapacitated due to illness, so the VRMMO game was an escape for her.

However, her health deteriotes to such an extent that she cannot life without machine assistant but one day after a blackout, she thinks she is dead but instead she wakes up in the world of Leadale the VRMMO she played. Sadly, the story does not dwindled onto the period prior to her getting isekai-ed which would have given a lot more emotional baggage for her characters since in this new world not only is she able to walk and do things she struggle to do before, she is actually super OP. Hence, it would build up more her travelling and how she justs want to enjoy life in this new world.

So, Leadale is quite slow life and its director and studio has done series like it before like By The Grace of The Gods. It should be an enjoyable title for fans of slow life - iyashikei series.

The Genius Prince's Guide To Raising A Nation Out of Debt

A light novel adaptation that follows a genius prince that wants to sell his kingdom and leave in peace...  So yeah, the title is basically a neat description of the series and its quite a simple set up. The main character is burdened by his genius that is only by his laziness and unwillingness to do anything annoying or bothersome which is what ruling a country seems to be... I guess.

So the main character is always thinking about selling his kingdom off and going off to live in peace and for that he attempts to makes moves against his nation in order for him to basically to sell it out without looking like he actually is. His plans succeeded but not in the way that he wants, instead his plans end up benefitting his country and the people start to hail him as a great king. So in essence, it has a misunderstanding comedy type that drives the story, at least at the beginning.

The studio handling this series is Yokohama Animation laboratory which is a new studio with only a handful of tv series in their catalogue. The staff working on it does not look great but the PV looks okay and I think this can get by if it manages to get the comedy right.

Notable Mentions - Akebi's Sailor Uniform & My Dress Up Darling

The animation for both series looks great, Akebi will surely be a great slice of life and sweet story like the original manga. However, JC Staff is studio that pumps out a lot of shows - in fact they have four shows just in this winter season... So I left it out partially because that might mean the animation will be quite uneven throughout the show and also because the staff is a bit unexperienced. But I hope it turns out good.

Dress up Darling is a cute romance story featuring a loner boy with a love for sewing and his encounter with the popular gal, who loves cosplay so he gets entangled into making various costumes for her to dress up as. It is a sweet romance story but once again the staff and studio has me a bit cautious - I have learned from Shinka no Mi from fall... But yes hopefully Cloverworks, another studio like JC Staff that pumps out too many shows, and the staff manage to deliver a good product.

Summer is here and we have a load of new anime to watch, but no one's got time to watch everything. So we are here with a list of titles to watch but also to avoid, because no one wants to waste time watching a stinker series.
